Search engine optimisation (SEO)

In France, Google accounts for over 90% of internet searches though in the United States other search engines such as Yahoo and Bing are also used to a significant extent.

Until recently SEO concentrated almost exclusively on keywords. It used to be said that you should put yourself in the shoes of a person looking for something you have on your site. What would you type into a search engine? That done, you should fill the page with your chosen keywords even if it made it almost unreadable.

In addition you needed incoming links even if they came from ‘link farms’, sites whose sole purpose was to improve e-commerce sites’ search engine ranking.

Thankfully Google has spotted this kind of trick and now penalises such practises.

Although it still true that you should think about keywords and incoming links, to be on the first page of Google what you need now is well-presented relevant content.

Relevant content

In this case relevant content means useful information related to the keyword search. Publicity for your products or service is not enough. People will visit your site and recommend it if they find objective answers to their questions. This is one of the secrets of Amazon’s success: the site allows negative reviews of products it sells.

Search engines are not everything

A recommendation on Facebook, Twitter or another social network is extremely valuable.

A quality blog can attract a million visitors a year. Even if only 1% of these visitors click on the link to your commercial website that means a large number of qualified visitors – i.e. people who are truly interested in your products or services.

It’s a lot of work, but an essential part of a marketing strategy.

Don’t forget to link off-line publicity to the site and use the same graphic ideas everywhere to enhance recognition.

As well as our expertise in graphic design, we have considerable knowledge of database creation, programming and project management, with over 25 years’ experience in these areas. Some of our sites have been developed using PHP and MySQL, a combination which limits costs. We also use ready-made content management systems (mainly WordPress) for ease of updating, if they correspond to the client’s needs. However, unlike many small web design companies, if necessary, we can develop sites from scratch. All sites are tested with the latest browsers.
